Project | Paint-Some-Happy
Description | It started with a birthday. Every year, when Meggie (one of the founders) celebrates her birthday, it's always with an activity that engages her friends to work towards something benefiting the community, particularly kids. In 2011, her birthday was celebrated with her friends painting murals in the children's ward at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Hospital. Although our birthdays are months apart, I'd always been happy to help in organizing her celebrations, and so in January 2013, when an opportunity presented itself for Meggie to create something beyond her annual festivities, I was more than willing to hop on board with her to create what later was called The Paint-Some-Happy Project. With the support of The Spark Project, a crowd-funding platform for Filipino talents and projects, we achieved our funding goal and launched our first official Paint-Some-Happy Days in May 2013. The Paint-Some-Happy Project engages volunteers of all ages to paint otherwise blank walls in public spaces accessible to kids with rough backgrounds, to give them a space to dream, and to dream BIG, through hope-inspiring art. We fill the walls with illustrated art that the kids can relate to. More importantly, we use art to challenge the kids to dream – with sections of the wall to be an open canvass for the kids where they will complete the sentence: “Pag tanda ko, gusto kong maging ____.” (When I grow up, I want to be ____.) Realizing the value of being able to own their dreams, we allow kids to place their own designs on the walls, to serve as a projection of the fulfillment of their dreams, and of what they could become.
